Tornado Intercept Vehicle (TIV) Hit by Wedge Tornado

AngelicView: This happened just today in Kansas. (When I say “just today”, what I really mean is yesterday. Because “today” is now “tomorrow” 😉  ). It’s amazing that the vehicle wasn’t picked up by the tornado and flung! This is what the owner says about it:

“flaps and panels drops down and 2 spikes drives into the ground”

He says this vehicle was built specifically for tornado interception.

Video Description: Brandon Ivey and Sean Casey got inside of a violent wedge tornado today. Brandon shot this insane footage of the TIV2 (tornado intercept vehicle) inside of a violent wedge tornado northeast of Smith Center, Kansas over eastern Smith County.

Wind speeds were 150 to 175 EF3 to EF4 before the tornado ripped the instruments off the top of the TIV.

  1. If they don’t look like wedges, I wonder why they’re called “wedge tornadoes” instead of, I dunno, “block tornadoes”? And I thought all tornadoes are funnel-shaped! Those who chase storms – mind boggling.
